Jet of Blood, deconstructed from Artaud (2019)

Jet of Blood, deconstructed from Artaud is a performative deconstruction of the French dramatist and essayist Antonin Artaud’s 1925 performance text, Jet of Blood, and his seminal writing on performance, Theatre of Cruelty (First Manifesto) (1932). Using these texts as a foundation, Jet of Blood, deconstructed from Artaud examines and questions the doctrine of Artaud through the lens of twenty-first century information saturation.

The piece takes shape through analysis of religious and secular rites, filling existing structures of rituals with distorted and imagined value systems. These rites take their place among synthesized soundscapes and choreographic patterns, with full on ritual chanting to the cult of Artaud.

Jet of Blood, deconstructed from Artaud was developed as part of Glenn Potter-Takata’s MFA thesis portfolio at Sarah Lawrence College, and was performed in the Frances Ann Cannon Theatre in March of 2019 as part of Sarah Lawrence College’s Mainstage Theatre Season.
